As part of the exhibition Pixação: Resistance and Rebellion, we are hosting a special Black Book Session on Saturday, June 28. From 14:30 to 15:30, there will be a panel talk with João Correia (guest curator), Eneri, and AGAIN. During this session, we’ll explore the similarities between the Amsterdam City Kid graffiti movement and the Brazilian Pixação movement. After the talk (15:30 – 16:30), there will be a signing session with the artists. This activity is included with a regular museum ticket. Due to limited seating, we kindly recommend arriving early.
João Correia is a Brazilian historian and curator, renowned for his in-depth research and curatorial work on pixação. His academic and curatorial endeavors have significantly contributed to the understanding and appreciation of this unique movement. João has been working closely with pixadores Cripta Djan and Eneri. Their partnership has been instrumental in exploring the socio-cultural dimensions of the marginalized youth in Brazil's urban peripheries. Correia's curatorial projects have aimed to bridge the gap between this grassroots movement and the broader art world.
Irene Avramelos, known in streets as Eneri (her name backwards) was born and raised in São Paulo. As a teenager, she discovered pixo gatherings. She began actively painting the city’s streets in 2013. She is part of the generation of pixadoras whose objective is to break down gender barriers and contest the limits of art, a world Eneri began to enter in 2020, using not just walls, but also screens, videos and more to debate feminism, decolonization, inequality, and other issues.
AGAIN is one of the biggest names in Amsterdam graffiti history. He has been active since early 1984. As a kid, there were plenty of writings on the wall, which inspired him to enter the game himself. In search of a name, he eventually came up with what would arguably turn out to be the best graffiti name ever. It also proved to be a match made in heaven. Few artists have ever lived up to their name the way AGAIN has, there has never been a time when this man wasn’t up in the city. A true ambassador of Amsterdam graffiti, AGAIN published the book Amsterdam on Tour - The Early Signs of Dutch Graffiti in 2019.
