On Thursday, June 26th, we’re hosting the opening reception of our new exhibition Pixação: Resistance and Rebellion. This exhibition traces the movement’s evolution across three phases: emergence, confrontation, and innovation, through the works of LIXOMANIA!.zé, Cripta Djan and Eneri, complemented by archival materials.
What exactly is Pixação? Pixação is a Brazilian form of graffiti - although in its home country and to those in the know there is a clear distinction between the two. Pixadores, as the practitioners of Pixação are called, seldom create visuals, only letters. Their calligraphy is composed of straight lines and sharp edges, giving their creations – pixos – a raw look. Far beyond an aesthetic practice or an act of vandalism, Pixação is a complex form of social and political expression, where exclusion and inequality shape everyday life.
