Mick La Rock

(The Netherlands, 1970)

Mick La Rock is one of Europe’s first and best-known female graffiti artists. She started writing her name MICKEY in 1983, inspired by the streets of Groningen and the subway trains of New York. In her post-graffiti work, Mick alienates every element of her graffiti name into minimalist, brutalist abstraction, moving away from traditional style writing and its original essence and composition.

“In 2018, I received an invitation from SUSO33 and Antonio from MTN’s Tramontana Magazine to come to Madrid. One day, my eyes caught a concrete building rising out above the trees in the distance. I have a huge love for brutalism. I love the raw concrete, especially when it’s not well-maintained. There was graffiti all over this building and there was no living soul using the space. Just perfect. The Facultad de Ciencias de la Información is forever attached to memories of my most wonderful time in Madrid.” / Mick La Rock

This artwork was created for our DUO exhibition. This exhibition was conceived by SUSO33 in collaboration with Santiago Herrero, director of Cultural and Scientific Relations for the Spanish Agency for International Development & Cooperation. The exhibition has been carefully curated by SUSO33 and STRAAT's head curator, David Roos. Click here for more info on DUO.

Mick La Rock (NL) and SUSO33 (ESP) discuss their contributions to DUO. Mick and SUSO worked side by side to each create a piece for the theme Architectural Styles.
