(The Netherlands, 1981)

“This artwork is part of my series called Trapped. This is a series where I wrap iconic cartoon characters around their real version. This makes for an interesting dance between the two worlds where the real version hides behind the cartoon. With this, I also refer to social media, a world where we act differently and better from how we are, and hide behind a mask. I have no professional education in arts, I’m truly self-taught. Started as a graffiti writer in 1994. Which is still my foundation. After that, I was a set builder, working for several theme parks. That’s where I first noticed this contrast between this world of marvel and what is hidden beneath it. This contrast makes for a certain tension. So I started painting a lot of cartoons from my youth for the Trapped series, which has also become an homage to my childhood. It actually took a while for me to link this series back to my set building days.” / Super A
