British artist SHOK-1 creates unique X-ray art. The works present a kind of diagnosis of life in the 21st century, sometimes in glowing health and other times pathological. Darkly beautiful and packed with subtle layers of intricate detail, he sees X-rays as one of the most difficult subject matters a painter could attempt. SHOK-1 has pioneered cutting-edge freehand techniques using no tape or stencils to render his X-ray style.
βI do use real X-rays for reference. I started using medical equipment to shoot my own, as it goes. I think a better description of what Iβm after is verisimilitude β¦ a sort of truth to materials in a conceptual sense. The whole thing is an extended metaphor and I feel like it starts to fall apart if I donβt strive for accuracy.β / SHOK-1
