Universo Em Expansão

In his nature paintings, Mateus Bailon looks to Brazil’s colorful fauna and flora to define his own private universe. Deeply inspired by the natural wonders of his hometown Itajaí, in the south of Brazil, as well as by mythology and other mysteries of humanity, Mateus often envisions his own magical creatures: mostly birds, many with horns. Conscious of the existential threats facing Brazil’s natural environments today, he admits that the motivation behind much of his work is to raise awareness of the fact that we all belong to nature.

In Universo em Expansão, he depicts allegorical birds guarding a mysterious portal to his own unique universe. What precisely is in that universe remains open to personal interpretation.
