Out There Somewhere – The Jaunt x STRAAT
New sights, new cultures, and new friendships can all be powerful catalysts for the creative process of an artist. Copenhagen-based project The Jaunt brings all of these forms of inspiration together in a beautiful way.
STRAAT is proud to celebrate our global culture of Street Art and Graffiti, and what better way to do that than by highlighting a project like The Jaunt, which has now organized more than 100 trips around the globe.
For this special collaboration, STRAAT invited The Jaunt to co-curate an exhibition in our gallery space entitled Out There Somewhere. The exhibition focused on two veterans of their ongoing program — Wasted Rita (Portugal) and Tellas (Italy) — while also presenting an overview of The Jaunt’s extensive print archive, featuring heavy hitters such as Cleon Peterson, Cody Hudson, Evan Hecox, Laura Berger, Tim Biskup, and many more.
With the world just starting to open up again, Out There Somewhere was a perfect reminder to travel, discover new places, and seek out fresh inspiration.
Wasted Rita
The Portuguese artist Wasted Rita explores her love-hate relationship with life and the world around her. Dubbing herself a Natural Born Agent Provocateur, she thinks, writes, and draws without filter, resulting in sharp and sarcastic gems of wisdom. Her perspective reflects her unconventional upbringing in a Catholic school. Rita was also a participant in the highly acclaimed Dismaland project from world-renowned street and conceptual artist Banksy.
Tellas
The Italian artist Tellas draws inspiration from flora and foliage. His abstract organic patterns, recognizable for their sophisticated aesthetic and meticulous detail, create poetic and meditative artworks. By juxtaposing his work directly within the urban environment through large-scale murals, Tellas reflects on the deep ties between humans and nature, as well as the complex dynamics that bind us together as part of one system.
The Jaunt
Since its inception in 2013, The Jaunt has created opportunities for more than 100 trips with artists all over the world. The project allows artists to experience new cultures and find inspiration — not just during the journey itself, but through lasting impressions that often influence their entire artistic practice.
