talk: through the eyes of Lynnée Denise

Get to know the perspectives of different creators and learn how they reflect on the exhibition ART IS NOT A CRIME from their respective fields.
Saturday, October 17, at 14.00 we are joined by Lynnée Denise (DJ Scholarship and author).
Lynnée Denise will discuss the cultural ecosystem surrounding graffiti art in the 1980s, highlighting how visual culture was bound up with sonic cultures that were equally criminalised, policed, and contested throughout the decade.
Drawing on decades of research in visual culture and her work as a DJ, Denise approaches DJing as an investigative practice informed by DJ Scholarship, a method she designed in 2013 to examine the social and political cultures embedded within the visual and musical cultures of the Long 80s.
Her talk considers graffiti, music, sound, and urban space as interconnected expressions of cultural and political life. This talk will be framed through the context of what she refers to as “sound system geographies.”
