Guido van Helten’s large-scale and monochromatic portraits are photorealism at its best. The Australian artist’s body of work is inspired by the locations where he leaves his art. Before actually painting, Guido always begins with a deep immersion into the local community coupled with meaningful research into the local topics he feels need representation.

In Untitled, Guido portrays Peter Hoogewerf, who as the STRAAT owner is a central figure in the history of this museum. For this portrait, Guido used roughly applied local sand on the background to resemble a concrete wall, the most common surface for his creations
