At a young age, influenced by the aesthetics of corporate fonts from the 1970s and 1980s, YorkOne developed an interest in logos and letters. In the early 1980s, during the punk graffiti era, he began writing on the streets of Amsterdam. When New York subway graffiti arrived in Europe, he was right in the thick of it. Years later, he developed the recognisable style he uses today: a combination of the rebellious energy of graffiti and the symmetrical forms of typography.
"Convinced of our own omniscience, we have dismissed the invaluable wisdom carved in stone or written on lost scrolls by ancient, long-gone societies as outdated. Or simply as lost, just as we are today. Although dismissed as clichés – no longer meaningful enough to be spoken aloud – these truths still seep through the cracks in our modern culture. Stripped of their original power, they have been watered down into clever-sounding one-liners that try to sell us eternal happiness. This work symbolises the dusting off of these ancient truths – I breathe new life into them and restore their true power, which we sorely need today. / YorkOne
